Richard Edwards shares Expert Witness CV tips in podcast

Judges decide cases based upon the evidence presented by the parties. That evidence is contained in either witness statements, expert witness reports or formal documents known as pleadings. In serious injury litigation there is always a role played by expert witnesses, to a greater or lesser extent.

Lawyers must therefore have a good understanding of the rules relating to expert evidence. They must work closely with experts to make sure that the evidence they produce is admissible, credible and addresses the issues that the court needs help with to decide the outcome of the case.

There are a wide range of expert witnesses available on any given topic. The first step in the process for the lawyer therefore is to pick the right expert for the job. This must be done with care. Richard Edwards has over twenty years experience in handling high value and complex injury litigation. During that time, he has instructed hundreds of expert witnesses. Richard is also a member of the Board of Governors at the Expert Witness Institute, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring that expert witnesses produce high quality evidence and thus support the proper administration of justice.

Recently, Richard spoke about the approach that he takes to the selection of expert witnesses in cases where he acts. Often these are serious injury cases where liability is disputed. Richard explained how he will look at several cvs from different candidates and study them carefully before drawing up a shortlist. He will then approach a short list of potential candidates for an initial discussion.
